What Is SEO/Search Engine Optimization?
Whenever you enter a query in a search engine (such as Google, Yahoo or Bing) and hit ‘enter’ you get a list of web results that contain that query term. Users normally tend to visit websites that are at the top of this list as they perceive those to be more relevant to the query. Some of these websites regularly rank better than others because of the powerful web marketing technique called Search Engine Optimization (SEO).
SEO is the process of getting traffic from the “free,” “organic,” “editorial” or “natural” listings on search engines. SEO thus helps you get traffic from search engines. Payment isn’t involved, as it is with paid search ads. The key to getting high search rankings is setting your site up in a way that will be read clearly by the search engines using relevant keywords and phrases. For example, if you own an automotive shop some keywords and phrases you would want to use would be: car repair, oil change, tires, brakes, mufflers…
There are many other factors involved with SEO, but using keywords and phrases and a good site description is the first step. Once a site is up and running it’s also important to submit the site’s URL (or address) to the search engines so each of them “crawls” through the site and indexes the information. It’s a simple and quick process and should also be done after site additions are made.
